Moto Hope Capital is privy to the reality of access to clean fuel and technologies as one of the 17 SDGs aimed at reducing excessive energy losses at household level. Our energy saving jikos (cooking stoves) are going a long way in saving energy, reducing carbon emissions, saving time and wood fuel consumption.

Diana Juma’s household is the happy owners of Eco Zoom’s jiko Fresh from Moto Hope Capital, which has totally changed and upgraded their cooking habits. With the jiko, her family’s cooking time has reduced by half. She and her three school going daughters are able to prepare meals faster saving time which they can use to do other domestic chores. When helping at home after school hours, her girls finish cooking early enough and have enough time to school assignments, study and turn in to rest early in the night.

Before the energy saving jiko, Diana says over 25% of her earnings was spent on fuel. Fuel that is neither environmental friendly or healthy. Now she spends at most 15% of it during school holidays when the children have all their meals at home and much less when school is in session. As opposed to the normal jiko and the three-stone open fire that she used previously, the jiko fresh has reduced smoke and carbon dioxide emissions which spare them the adverse health effects of indoor pollution.

Meals that would otherwise take a long time to cook, e.g. a mixture of boiled maize and beans popularly known as githeri are left on the stove outside the house when the family goes to bed and when the charcoal fuel burns out, the jiko’s retained heat is able to continue the boiling process such that when they wake in the morning they only use one more charcoal fill to fully cook the meal. She would previously use at least five jiko charcoal fills to get such food ready for consumption. Her delight in this money, time and energy saving investment is her pure delight, she says happily.
